Meet Kalista

“What made you want to be a doula?” People ask.

“A homework assignment?” I say, because that’s where it started. But the real reason comes even before that.

When I was in high school, I was told to write up a research paper on any topic I wanted. I chose midwifery, randomly, because I thought it was cool. (It definitely is.) In my research on that noble profession, I came across, ever so briefly, the knowledge of what a doula was. Later that year my best friend’s mom was expecting her sixth baby, and I was invited to attend the birth.

As my friend and I were sitting in the hospital room while her mom labored, I remember expressing to her my interest in doula work, as well as my serious doubts that it would ever be something I would do. But she told me she thought I could.

I remember as the moment of birth approached and all the nurses ran in, I stayed seated in the chair on the side of the room, away from all of it, because I was afraid. Was I really ready to witness all this? Would it scare me away from birth thereafter?

I’m so glad it didn’t.

That birth experience, though I was very minimally involved, opened the door to an excitement in me surrounding birth and a desire to pursue it as a doula in the years that followed.

Caring for mothers is my passion. Supporting them in labor and delivery is my work. Encouraging them as they bring life into the world is something I truly believe God made me to do.

I believe that women’s bodies were crafted to be givers of life. I believe that birth is inherently not a medical emergency, but rather something that should be treated as sacred and life-changing. And I believe that women should be cared for with love, education, and personalized support in their journey into motherhood.

I would love to serve you, because birth is more than just the birth of a new baby. It’s the birth of a new mother.
